FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT ARE TYLES?
Tyles are cut vinyl appliques, created in the spirit of tile. Nic pulls inspiration from Moroccan and Persian tilework, Italian design, as well as everyday subject matter like food and drink. All patterns are hand drawn by Nic, and after the color stories are chosen, they are cut and arranged by her vinyl printer. So when you buy Tyles, you are buying a genuinely unique designer product.
WHY BUY TYLES OVER ANY OTHER WALL DECOR OR BACKSPLASH PRODUCT?
Tyles is a completely temporary designer option for your backsplash or wall decor. Unlike other tile peel-and-stick solutions found in a lot of home improvement stores, Tyles are not faux. They are not trying to fool anyone. Tyles have the style of high-end wallpaper, and the spirit of a tile, with a much easier application. And because there is no background color or “grouting”, you can paint your wall whatever color you would like to coordinate with your Tyles purchase, giving you an infinite amount of design possibilities.
The sets of twelve 8″ tiles were put together for ease of application and flexibility of space. Whether it’s a full wall, a border, or a detail, Tyles are the perfect size to work with. Tyles can be easily removed, and will not do damage to your wall. It is the perfect solution for renters, home owners in-between renovations, retailers, or anyone who is just looking for a change in their space without a commitment.
WHAT COMES IN THE PACKAGE?
Included in the Tyles set are 12 8"x8" Tyles, an instruction sheet for application, a plastic applicator with handle, and a sample piece of the Tyles vinyl for testing on your wall. Nothing else is necessary, except possibly some painter's tape for ease of alignment, and a smooth, clean surface.
WHAT IS YOUR RETURN POLICY?
Each set of Tyles comes with a sample piece of vinyl for you to test on your walls. If the vinyl does not stick for whatever reason, you may return your unused sets for a full refund (shipping charges still apply). However, once you begin to apply Tyles, the sets are no longer returnable.
Returns must be made within 30 days. After 30 days, all sales are final.
CAN I APPLY TYLES MYSELF?
Absolutely! The only required materials are painter’s tape (for placement), a plastic flat edge (a tool is included, though a credit card will do), and a smooth clean surface on which to apply the Tyles. Of course, having a partner to help will always make things go faster (and possibly be more fun!), but it’s certainly not necessary.
CAN TYLES WORK ON ANY SURFACE?
Tyles should be applied to a smooth, clean surface. Painted walls, glass, ceramic, and metal are all options. Unpainted sheet rock, cardboard, etc are not. It is also suggested by the vinyl manufacturer that walls are painted at least 2 weeks in advance of application, if not longer, so that the paint has the appropriate amount of time to cure.
Uneven walls, such as plaster, might be a bit difficult. It can be done, but it’s not easy. Painted sheet rock or smooth plaster are definitely best.
Each order of Tyles comes with a sample piece for you to try on your wall first, so that you know if the applique will work on your surface.
I SEE THE SAME DESIGN ON DIFFERENT BACKGROUND COLORS. WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND LIKE?
Tyles do NOT come with a background color. The patterns stand alone, so that your wall color acts as the "grouting" so to speak. This gives you endless design options for your home or office!
THIS IS OFTEN USED AS A BACKSPLASH PRODUCT. CAN TYLES BE EASILY CLEANED?
Yes. Simply avoid drenching them in liquid, or using too firm a hand. We recommend using a damp cloth, or a paper towel lightly sprayed with a simple soap and water solution, and then lightly wiping down the surface. And remember, if anything should happen to your Tyles, you can always buy replacements.
CAN TYLES BE USED IN A BATHROOM?
Yes! Tyles products will work well on a painted bathroom wall, or similar smooth surface. We have even tested this in our own very humid bathroom with no fan – the Tyles are still up!
HOW LONG DO TYLES LAST?
As with any other product made from the same vinyl material, Tyles are made to last at least 3 years. With the right care, they can last much longer. Because we don’t make the material itself, however, this is not something we can guarantee. If you want more information on the material used, please contact us.
WHEN APPLYING TYLES, THE PATTERN STICKS TO THE BACKING RATHER THAN THE FRONT FILM. HOW DO I CHANGE THAT?
Sometimes, Tyles sticks to the backing page that you are supposed to remove first during application. This is easily fixed. When you've placed the Tyles on the wall with your painter's tape, go over it with your plastic smoother, applying pressure. This should help the sticky top film to re-adhere to the pattern and pull it up from the backing. Pull the backing off slowly after this, reapplying pressure to the top film if it happens again during removal.
CAN I REUSE TYLES?
No. The patterns contain small-ish cuts, and would be damaged while picking them up off the wall.
HOW DO YOU REMOVE TYLES?
It is easy to remove Tyles without damage to your walls. Simply pick up the corner of the pattern piece with your nail and pull up -- SLOWLY. If you have any problems removing the vinyl, use a hairdryer to heat Tyles for 1-2 minutes. Then start again. The heat will soften up the adhesive, making it easier to lift off. This is an simple process, but it can be time-consuming. A partner to help would speed things up.
If there is any adhesive left on your wall, try rubbing off with a finger or using warm soapy water to remove. If it's still present, you can use a bit of nail polish remover to take it off (but test on your wall first to ensure that there won't be damage to the paint).
CAN WE ORDER DIFFERENT COLORS THAN THE ONES LISTED?
Customized orders are an option, though they would incur an extra fee and take more time. Please let us know if you have a special request and we’ll see what we can do for you.
WHERE ARE TYLES MADE?
Tyles are designed and packaged by The Nic Studio in Brooklyn, NY, and they are manufactured in California. So they are officially MADE IN THE USA! We're proud to say that we've worked hard to keep them here in the states. Currently, Tyles are made to order so that our customers get the best product possible.
HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO MAKE TYLES?
Seriously, so excited.
